About Sanjog

Sanjog is a grassroots organization working since 2014 to strengthen rural livelihoods in Assam. With over a decade of field engagement and mentorship from KABIL, which is an experienced CSO in promotiong Rural Livelihood. Sanjog has impacted around 4,000 lives across marginalized farming communities.
SANJOG works across the districts of Baksa, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Barpeta, and Kamrup in Assam, focusing on promoting sustainable livelihoods, clean energy-based microenterprises, and climate-resilient livelihood practices. The organization also plays a critical role in emergency response, having actively supported marginalized communities during the COVID-19 pandemic and in times of recurring floods. Through its interventions, SANJOG aims to build long-term community resilience and inclusive rural development.
Sanjog’s theory of change is rooted in enabling transformative change among the marginalized by building resilient rural economies through integrated natural resource management, rural entrepreneurship, and ecosystem convergence. It links people to entitlements, strengthens local institutions, and promotes scalable solutions.
SANJOG is a grassroots non-profit organization working to address the systemic challenges faced by marginalized rural communities in Assam. Since its inception in 2014, SANJOG has focused on catalyzing sustainable development through livelihood enhancement. The organization was initially mentored by KABIL, an experienced Non-profit with deep expertise in rural livelihoods. SANJOG began its journey in Kamrup district, supporting marginal farmers with irrigation infrastructure. Over time, its work expanded to the more underserved districts of Baksa, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Kamrup, and Barpeta, designing context-specific interventions to support vulnerable households.
Piyush Saurabh Sharma is a grassroots development practitioner from Nalbari, Assam, with over two decades of experience. He began his career in 2004 with Manav Shakti Jagaran, a grassroots NGO in Nalbari, where he worked on flood relief, promotion of rural livelihoods, and microfinance. In 2008, he became an independent consultant, supporting grassroots NGOs and conducting key studies across Northeast India on different development issues. In 2014, he joined KABIL, where he deepened his understanding of promoting farm-based livelihoods among smallholder farmers and worked extensively on convergence with government schemes like MGNREGA to strengthen village-level planning and rural asset creation. The same year, he founded SANJOG, a CSO based in Nalbari that supports rural livelihoods and works closely with marginalized communities in Lower Assam districts. He is also the Convenor of Northeast Together Network (NET), a solidarity platform of CSOs across Northeast India. To strengthen grassroots development and foster a credible social sector, he supports various CSOs across Northeast India by providing organizational development and capacity-building assistance.

Stories From the Fields

Alpana Baishya, a woman with a disability from Kadamtala village in Assam, overcame financial and physical barriers to start her own tailoring business. With support from Sanjog and the Selco Foundation, she received a solar-powered sewing machine and essential equipment. This intervention enabled her to earn ₹7,000–₹8,000 per month, gain financial independence, and inspire others in her community. Her story highlights how targeted, inclusive, and sustainable solutions can empower marginalized individuals to achieve self-reliance.

Alpana Baishya

Four women from Barpeta, Assam—Papori Deka, Renu Bodo, Arati Bodo, and Phanja Bodo—transformed their lives by starting a mushroom farm with training and support from the NGO SANJOG. Despite hardships like poverty and floods, they built a sustainable livelihood, expanding from 20 to over 100 mushroom cylinders and earning profits. Their success inspired others in the village and demonstrated the power of resilience, community support, and women’s empowerment.

Papori Deka, Renu Bodo, Arati Bodo, and Phanja Bodo

Tifil Tirkey, a 24-year-old from Uttarapara village with a disability, transformed his life with support from SANJOG and SELCO Foundation. With a heavily subsidized 210-watt solar power system, he started his own printing and DTP shop, breaking free from low-wage work and power outages. His income rose by over 50%, boosting financial stability and independence. The initiative not only improved his livelihood but also promoted clean energy, reduced costs, and built entrepreneurial skills—showcasing a replicable model for sustainable, inclusive development
